Everything is going wireless. According to the latest forecast by Gartner, internet of things (IoT) connections for the enterprise and automotive markets alone will increase by 21% from 2019, reaching a staggering 5.8 billion endpoints in 2020.
The coming year is expected to mark more IoT milestones with growing uses of new wireless standards expanded upon existing technologies. At the same time, we will witness rising radio resource challenges and the implementation of innovative approaches to address them.
As the IoT landscape quickly evolves, here are five major wireless trends you can expect this year.
1. Increasing Prevalence of New Wireless Standards
From 5G and Wi-Fi 6 to Bluetooth 5.0 and standard-based low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) protocols, I believe wireless standards that were mostly nascent in 2019 will take a big leap in terms of maturity and adoption in 2020.
5G is omnipresent, and with Release 16, which is expected to be finalized later in 2020, the 3GPP is working toward the “full 5G vision.” The release includes new technologies for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and a multitude of improvements in terms of mobility, power consumption and spectral efficiency over the current release. However, devices and equipment incorporating the new features are further down the road.
