GERMAN businesses have urged the UK to reach a deal with the EU ahead of the upcoming November deadline while also criticising Theresa May’s Chequers proposals, at a time when the Prime Minister is facing increasing pressure over her Brexit blueprint.

Joachim Lang, director-general of Germany’s BDI industry federation, warned that the UK and EU do not have much time left to strike a deal.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Mr Lang said: “We have reached a critical phase. The time that remains is incredibly short.”

Mr Lang said the two sides are not prepared for the outcome if there is no deal.

He said: “In a no-deal scenario, and without a transition phase, we would end up with a border and customs regime that no one is prepared for.”

And Mr Lang slammed the Prime Minister’s Brexit plans as unworkable.

Mr Lang said: “The UK says it wants to keep the free movement for goods but become independent with regard to the other freedoms. We believe that cannot work.

“When we sell a piece of machinery today, we don’t just sell the product. We also sell services, data and maintenance.

“You cannot pick one freedom but leave the other three on the sidelines.”

It comes as Mrs May’s white paper has been widely attacked by Brexiteers, with David Davis and Boris Johnson standing down from the Cabinet in protest over the proposals.

The former foreign secretary described the plans as a “fix” that would only lead to “victory” for the EU.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Johnson said: “The fix is in. The whole thing is about as pre-ordained as a bout between Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy; and in this case, I am afraid, the inevitable outcome is a victory for the EU, with the UK lying flat on the canvas and 12 stars circling symbolically over our semi-conscious head.”

In the blistering attack the Uxbridge MP denied that the UK would take back control from Brussels under Mrs May’s plans.

He said: “We will remain in the EU taxi; but this time locked in the boot, with absolutely no say on the destination. We won’t have taken back control – we will have lost control.”

The UK is set to leave the EU on March 29.
